IS THIS SOUTH SOUTH SULAWESI TRIP FOR YOU?
The answer will be ‘yes’ if:
· You want to be a member of a team of like-minded people from all parts of the world bent on learning, enjoying and cycling through the rich cultural traditions of a country new to you.
· You’re open to the vagaries of a non-tourist experience. The accommodation will be basic, the food will be predominantly rice based Indonesian and the daily scheduling may sometimes be awry due to local socio-cultural conditions.
· You’re accepting of the experiences that a 3rd world rural environment can give you.
· You can live without Western food or Western style nightlife for a week. For most of the time we’ll be in ‘Village Indonesia’ where many aspects of Western life are simply not available.
· You can go without alcohol for a couple of days because Muslim law prohibits its sale in some districts.
· You can enjoy the healthy physical exertion of 4-5 days of awesome hilly and mountainous terrain.
· You can maintain a positive attitude to travelling in a group where sensitivity towards others’ needs is important. Caring, sharing and helping others will be integral aspects of the ride.
· You can appreciate and respect the fact that South Sulawesians have their own traditions, customs and attitudes which may be different to yours.
· You understand that the locals are gregarious, welcoming and have their ways of relating to foreigners which means that you will often be the focus of much friendly attention.
· You’re willing to prepare yourself physically for the Long Rides by slowly building up to an 80km ride in hilly terrain a week or two before departure.
